Why do you run?

Describe your best marathon memory.

Hearing my family yell for me as I came down the hill and across the bridge at Twin Cities Marathon hitting my PR of 2:55:10.  It was a long time ago, but meant a lot.

Bonus:  Running the shadow race of Boston in Tallil Iraq.  Seeing the ziggurot of Ur in a dust storm then lighting storm at about mile 8 was surreal.

Why do you pace?

I have raced since roughly 1980 and slowed down as I got over 50.  I enjoy giving back, helping people make their goals and keep on going!  It is a wonderful way to run.

Tell us your best pacing experience.

Last year a the Panama City Half Marathon I had a good crowd of runners with me, some of whom wanted to quit as it was hot, we kept it together and made it!  It was a great experience.  This has happened numerous times at Hot Chocolate as the Minneapolis course is very hilly.

Why should someone run in your pace group?

I tell stories as I run!  I will ask people how they are doing.  I will be on time (or dead) and let them know where we are as we hit the mile markers!

Any tips for runners about to join your group?

I ask them if they have run this distance before, how they have trained, etc.  If they are good with it, I tell them to go with me and see how it feels for the first half then go for the next pacer if they feel great or hang with me!  I have paced everything in the half from 1:50 to 3:00.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Glad to be here and help out!

What philanthropic activities do you have?

If it counts, I have coached soccer for youth for 5 years, sit on a few voluntary school groups supporting the local charter school.  We have also hosted language ambassadors at our home a few times!  Ok, toss in working at church too...
